Extreme Proves Dance Has The Power To Move Mzansi

Since the launch of the new Extreme Move Mzansi campaign in September and the finale of Bula Sekele S3 that took place this past weekend, Extreme – the alcoholic drink with a distinctive apple taste – knows the unstoppable positive power of dance and how it can Move Mzansi.

“Our new Move Mzansi campaign was always intended to be more than just an invitation to dance,” says Extreme Senior Brand Manager, Nicole Hewitt. “With the question, ‘What’s your move Mzansi?’, it encourages authentic self-expression while celebrating the positive impact of dance and movement.”

The campaign showcases the incredible diversity of South African dance culture – from the Kilimanjaro to the Hamba Wena to the Skhotane and more! Each dancer in the campaign represents a different style and region; not only moving Mzansi with their local dance styles, but also with their individual stories featured in a docuseries on MTV, YouTube, and social media. Each piece demonstrates the positive power of dance, and how it can be passed on and on, to inspire a nation!

We even took word to the streets with billboards across SA to further promote the campaign. “We had to raise our voice and make a statement, with a new look and feel incorporating vibrant colours,” continues Hewitt. “A lot has changed, but our core belief remains the same: that dance has the power to transform lives.”

Then, with Bula Sekele Season 3, South Africans from all corners of the country brought their moves into the circle. With the campaign highlighting the very best of Mzansi’s moves from Athlone, Giyani, eThekwini, Newtown and beyond, we’ve seen some of SA’s best-undiscovered dance talent come forward with their own, unique contagious vibe!

Season 3 judges, Tom London, from the world-renowned dance group Soweto’s Finest, Bula Sekele Season 1 winner Tylor Spelman and award-winning choreographer Sbo Ndaba, helped us choose our top 13 finalists, who took their talent to the stage at Zone 6 Venue, Soweto, on 9 December. Staying true to “opening up the circle”, free tickets were made available on the Extreme microsite to fans who signed up to join the Extreme Moovahs; and 10 lucky ticket holders were upgraded to VIP access.

This year, voting was also open to the public for the first time ever. So, in addition to the R200 000 grand prize, one lucky finalist got to dance their chance to the People’s Choice Award and R50 000 CASH.

Each contestant brought the FAYA, but in the end, it was Luzuko Namba who won the people’s vote, and Simphiwe Mbali who danced away as king  of the sekele! Congratulations, bomajaivane!

“There are few things that can unite people quite like dancing,” says Simphiwe Mbali. “Movement is powerful! I don’t know who I’d be if I didn’t dance.”

Joined by SA’s next-gen of hottest music talent, Pabi Cooper, Soweto’s Finest, Daliwonga and an exclusive surprise performance by popular local artist, Busiswa, it was a dance-off that proved to Move Mzansi,fo’sho’! Shout out to our MC, music producer and DJ MustBeDubz for providing the soundtrack of the night and of course, our Extreme Moovahs!

Nazo! Now don’t stop now, abo majikas. Let’s keep at it and Move Mzansi!
